A win on Prospect Hospice’s lottery came at an opportune time for Swindon resident Brian Bailey.

Soon after Brian (pictured) received notification he had won £1,000 in the hospice’s weekly draw, he received his car insurance renewal.

“The win on Prospect’s lottery was a nice surprise, although over half of it went straight away on my car insurance! I’ve also enjoyed some meals out with the winnings,” Brian said. “I’ve won £10 a couple of times playing Prospect Hospice’s lottery but £1,000 is the most I’ve ever won in my life.”

Brian, of Upper Stratton, has a personal connection with Prospect Hospice because his wife, Sheila, was cared for in the inpatient unit on two occasions when she had kidney cancer.

Brian and Sheila, who were married for 54 years, played the hospice’s lottery before Sheila became ill. They had seen first-hand the care given to relatives of Sheila who had stayed at the hospice.

When Sheila stayed in the hospice Brian was helped by a social worker to access financial support that Sheila was entitled to when she left the hospice to return home. Sheila died in September 2017 aged 79.

Brian, a retired insurance broker, said: “Prospect Hospice is a marvellous place. Sheila was quite happy in there. She was lucky to have a side room looking out over the garden and I remember deer coming into the garden. The help I received from the hospice’s social worker was invaluable, as I didn’t know where to start and his assistance eased the burden on me.

“Prospect Hospice is such a good cause. I’ve known other people who have been cared for at the hospice.

“It’s a wonderful charity and the care and attention they give to people who use it is marvellous. The hospice doesn’t charge people who need their services – it relies on donations so I think it’s important to support it. Playing the lottery is an easy way to support it and as I’ve found you also have a chance of winning a cash prize!”

Brian and Sheila Bailey

Brian and Sheila met while they worked at a bank in Bridgwater, Somerset, and married three years later.

They moved to Swindon in 1967 and had two daughters and four grandchildren. Sheila worked as a secretary at Blackwells garden centre and then as a cashier for Securicor, both in Swindon.

Sheila enjoyed sport and played hockey and tennis. When she played for Burnham Ladies Hockey Club in Somerset the team played on the beaches at Burnham and Minehead while the sea was out and Brian marked out the pitch for the teams. When they moved to Swindon, Sheila played for Pinehurst Hockey Club.

Brian and Sheila shared a love of singing. Sheila sang in the church choir at Bridgwater while Brian sings with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in Swindon.
