About the course

Effective symptom control in palliative care not only enhances the patient’s quality of life but also supports their ability to engage with loved ones; this maintains a sense of dignity and autonomy during their journey with serious illness.

After completing this course, you will understand how to assess and identify common symptoms in palliative and end of life care, gain a deeper understanding of effective strategies for the relief of pain and its symptoms, learn how to complete a comprehensive assessment and develop a range of communication strategies. The session also includes setting up and use of the new BD Bodyguard T Syringe Drivers.

You will also:

• Understand options for non-pharmacological management
• Learn common side effects of palliative/EOL medication and alternative medications
• Be able to evaluate symptoms
• Communicate with patient, families and the multi-disciplinary teams during the dying phase
• Understand how to set up, monitor and discontinue an infusion via the BD Bodyguard T Syringe Driver
• Understand the use and action of the most frequently used BD Bodyguard T Syringe Driver medications
• Understand where to seek help if needed with specialist palliative medicines and EOL care
