Because of you...

My Uncle Ian could stay at home

The wisest thing my Uncle Ian ever told me?: “Don’t say no until you’ve had a go!”

My Uncle Ian always said that to me growing up. He encouraged me to be the best person I can be and made me believe I can achieve anything.

It was my Uncle Ian who taught me to ski. I remember following him as he carved effortlessly through the snow, making every turn look easy. He taught me to scuba dive, and we got our qualifications together in Malta, which will always be one of my proudest memories. I picked up my golf clubs because of him, too – though I haven’t replicated his famous
hole-in-one (yet!).

My Uncle Ian has always been there by my side. Whether on a rollercoaster, on top of a mountain, or at the bottom of the sea, I could always rely on him.

Then, in November 2016, Uncle Ian was diagnosed with cancer. Neuroendocrine cancer, to be precise; when your cells start to grow uncontrollably and stop working normally. Aged just 53, this strong, inspiring man, who lived life to the full, was told he only had a few years left. Which is how I learned about Prospect Hospice.

When you think of hospices, you think about end-of-life care. But Prospect is so much more than that. The wonderful nurses and experts advised my Uncle Ian and auntie on managing his pain and symptoms, and gave him treatment at home, which was his wish. They supported my auntie through the toughest time of her life.

I’ve seen first-hand the incredible work Prospect Hospice does – and it’s only possible because of your support. For that I want to say a huge thank you; for every penny, every second, every moment you’ve given to support their work.

Sadly, on Tuesday the 6th of February, Uncle Ian passed away, surrounded by family, surrounded by love. Along with my inspiring and strong parents, my Uncle Ian helped me live the best life I could. When he was most vulnerable, Prospect Hospice supported him to do that, too.

Prospect Hospice was there for my Uncle Ian, and for our family. I want to make sure Prospect can be there for more people like me and my family, for many more years to come.

Because of you...

We were able to fulfill Hope’s Uncle Ian’s wish, providing him with the care he needed to spend his final days at home, surrounded by loved ones and offering Hope and her family precious moments together.
