Prospect Hospice is the leading provider of education and training for end-of-life care in Swindon and north Wiltshire. Working closely with you, our colleagues within partner organisations, we want to ensure that the very best care is available to everyone facing the end of life. This is why we provide education and development opportunities, all of which aim to encourage learning and build confidence in end of life care and support.
Two friends who had no previous running experience trained together to complete the Swindon half marathon in aid of Prospect Hospice, raising over £ 1,500.
Holly Fuller and Jodie Black wanted to ‘give something back’ by doing a huge challenge and signed up to the half marathon to say thank you to the hospice for the care their families received: Holly’s nan used our Prospect@Home service before she died in October 2018, and Jodie’s granddad, known affectionately as ‘Gramp’, spent his final days in the hospice in 2017.
They began their training in May 2018, ahead of the September race date, but neither were prepared for how demanding the run would be. “We started the race together but finished at separate times,” said Jodie. “I wanted to cry during the race as it was very hard work, but I was spurred on near the end of the race by seeing this one lady holding up a sign, which read ‘it’s ok – it’s all downhill from here!’”
Holly managed to complete the race in just under three hours and Jodie came in at two hours and seven minutes. Both were relived to finish. “Jodie set herself a target of two and a half hours, so she was pleased to beat it. I was just happy I finished,” Holly laughed.
Since their amazing achievement, Holly and Jodie have signed up for this year’s Prospect Hospice Starlight walk and Run the Rainbow. Jodie will be supporting Prospect Hospice again in this year’s Swindon Half Marathon, hoping to finish in under two hours and raise more money for the charity. “It’s a charity close to my heart for the little things they did,” said Jodie. “Gramp was American and we wanted to do something special for him with an American theme. With the help of the nurses we were able to put on an American pancake party with the whole family! I will forever support Prospect Hospice and its lovely staff.”
Sally Bere, challenges fundraiser, said: “I would like to thank Jodie and Holly for all of their hard work. For two unexperienced runners to take on and finish the Swindon Half Marathon is amazing. They beat not only their fundraising goals, but also their finish times. Well done and thank you so much! We hope Jodie enjoys participating again this year.”
