Keen runner Sarah Moore trained to complete the London Marathon in aid of Prospect Hospice, raising £620.00.

Sarah wanted to ‘give something back’ by doing a challenge and signed up to the 2018 marathon to say thank you to the hospice for the care their family received: Sarah’s mother-in-law stayed on our Inpatient unit, spending her final days in the hospice before she died in 2018.

The family had the opportunity to stay in one of our lodges that can be found in our tranquil gardens at the hospice, helping them to stay near their loved one at their time of need. The lodges provide a temporary home for some of our patients’ visitors.

When you have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, the people closest to you are affected by it too. Sarah said: “I had never seen such care and support given to both Greg’s mum and our family.”

Training was going well until a torn calf muscle forced her to withdraw with just four weeks to go. Her place was deferred for a year, and training started again in January ahead of race day 2019, running just two days a week!

Friends and family were able to sponsor Sarah by the mile, in memory of someone and had the opportunity to have the names of loved ones printed on the running vest.

Sarah managed to complete the race in four hours and 43 minutes. “The race felt like a dream but was enjoyable at the same time, the crowds were amazing and it was great to be cheered on by Greg and our children,” commented Sarah.

The toughest part of the race for Sarah was when she reached the 22 mile mark. She was able to draw inspiration from the fact she was not only running in memory of Greg’s mum, but all of the other people who were named on her vest.

Since her amazing achievement, Sarah said: “I’ve already applied to run in 2020 and so has Greg!”

Sally Bere, Challenges Fundraiser said: “Thank you so much Sarah for raising money for us at Prospect Hospice and for sharing your story.”
