Prospect Hospice supporter Martin Irisarri organised a charity golf day at Manor House Golf Club in Castle Combe, raising £6,500 for the hospice, bringing the total raised to £14,000 in the last three years.
Keen golfer Martin Irisarri said: “All the players had a great time, and the Golf Club contributed generously to the price of the tickets.”
Ten years ago, Martin decided to mark his birthday in a different way. He had reached his mid-40s and, with good health and a comfortable living, wanted to ‘give something back’.
Having played golf for a couple of years he thought, “Why not have some fun and off the back of that, raise money for charities close to my heart?”
Martin organised his first charity golf day in 2008. Since then, the event has grown.
For the last three years, Martin has chosen to support Prospect Hospice, raising nearly £7,500. He was keen to bring that tally up to £10,000, thanks to individual donations and sponsorship from the companies below*, he reached his target ahead of the event.
Martin said: “I’ve been blown over by the level of support. I’m so grateful because hospice care touches us all and hospices like Prospect Hospice do brilliant work. I think, as a society, we still have to get smarter about end-of-life care.
“It’s a tragedy that so many hospices rely for 70% of their funding on charitable donations in order to operate. Yet, if you’re in my age group – I’ll be 55 this year – supporting elderly relatives, you realise just how important hospices are. You also start to realise it could impact on you personally at some point.”
Already planning for 2020, Martin said: “My wife despairs of me. She says that now I have taken the charity day to the next level, I’ll want to exceed it next year. She’s probably right!”
To give you an idea of how valuable fundraising like this is, £14,000 would pay for 42 days of care in our Inpatient unit or 466 hours of Prospect@Home, which helps people fulfil their wish to stay at home and offers much needed support for patients and their families.

*Martin would also like to thank the following companies who sponsored the event: Saint James Place, Blue Sabio Ltd, Simble Solutions Ltd, Digby Associates, Ask Wealth Management LLP, HSBC UK, Bellforce Development Ltd, MPK Garages Ltd, Forefront sales and lettings Ltd, LRG Financial Solutions Ltd.
