In September 2019 Caroline’s Dream Team ventured to London to walk a marathon in memory of former hospice patient Caroline Storey, including her husband, children and close friends.
Caroline had always wanted to take part in a marathon walk and everyone thought it would be fitting to take part in one to remember and celebrate her life, while raising funds for Prospect Hospice which cared for her in her final days.
Leading up to the event the team had been furiously fundraising by running bake sales and book stalls, organising quizzes and raffles and arranging matched funding through their employers.
Meeting up in the centre of London at 7am was the start of a very emotional day for the team. After enjoying a few bacon rolls to set them on the road, the challenge organisers began the warm up with the 2,000 who were taking part in the 26 mile walk around London. They found it poignant that the song used at the warm up was Sweet Caroline.
The walk allowed them to take in world famous sights and less well known corners as they traced a 26 mile route around London. They walked through peaceful parks, along waterways, passed iconic landmarks including the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye.
They all walked together meaning that during the walk they could share their memories of Caroline and embrace team spirit, helping each other along when required. Their half an hour lunch stop turned into over an hour, while they shared special memories.
When reaching the finish line there was an enormous sense of pride in what they had achieved, along with hugs and tears.
Now all of their fundraising money has been collected they are proud that they have raised over £5,639.63 to help Prospect Hospice care for other patients like Caroline.
Sally Bere, challenge events fundraiser at Prospect Hospice, met the team at the finish line to congratulate them on their achievement and said: “Thank you John, Becky, Matthew, Neve, Alan, Kerry, Louise, Rebecca and Tom for supporting the hospice. We look forward to see you at lots more challenges in the future. Caroline would be very proud of you all.”
Swindon and north Wiltshire’s local hospice had 28 people taking part in the London Marathon Walk and, between them, raised £16,000.
For those inspired by Caroline’s Dream Team, this year’s walk takes place on Saturday 19 September and the hospice is already filling places. Click here to find out more.
