Prospect Hospice is the leading provider of education and training for end-of-life care in Swindon and north Wiltshire. Working closely with you, our colleagues within partner organisations, we want to ensure that the very best care is available to everyone facing the end of life. This is why we provide education and development opportunities, all of which aim to encourage learning and build confidence in end of life care and support.
When my wife Angie died from cancer in 2023 your support meant that Prospect nurses could surround us with love. Thanks to your kindness, we could just concentrate on spending those last few weeks together with our three daughters.
Could you play the raffle again today, and be there for another family like ours? It’s such a brilliant way to help care for people in our community.
Angie had been through a difficult year of treatment when the doctors told us there was nothing more they could do. Straightaway, she said: “I want to go to Prospect Hospice”. She’d heard so much about the brilliant care they provide, and didn’t want to stay in hospital. As soon as we stepped inside the hospice, we just relaxed instantly. The nurses on the front desk said: “Treat this as your home.” The whole place was warm and colourful, and people were so friendly. It was so full of life.
At Prospect, we could just focus on enjoying the time we had left, and the girls could be with their mum. Will you join me today and play Prospect’s Spring raffle? It really will make such a difference – and you could be in with a chance of winning up to an amazing £3,000.
Normal family life, that’s what it was like. The girls would stay over, and in the morning the nurses would give a little knock on the door with tea and toast. One Saturday we were watching Strictly and we wondered if we were allowed to get pizza delivered. The nurses just said: “Of course you can!”
There was a really special day when we had a ceremony to bless our new wedding rings. The nurses did Angie’s hair and make-up, and she looked so beautiful. We all got dressed up, the girls did a little bouquet for their mum, and the staff decorated the gazebo outside with lights and flowers.
After the service, they played our song from when we met back in 1985 – True, by Spandau Ballet. Then we sat in the garden and spent precious hours together. That day meant we could all be a little bit more at peace, because we had managed to do this wonderful thing for Angie.
I remember it was so sunny on Angie’s last day. She was in the garden for hours, wrapped in blankets, just looking at the sky.She loved being outside. I have a picture of the sunlight just beaming on her face. Then one of the nurses told us, it won’t be long now. They did everything to make sure Angie was comfortable. We put her favourite music on, then the nurses dimmed the lights and stayed with us through the night.
All the way, the nurses gently guided us through what was happening, so we knew what to expect. It felt like we were being carried along and we didn’t have to worry about anything at all. When she passed, we were all holding her hand. It was beautiful. If there is a good way to go, that was it.
Could you help surround another family like ours with love when they need it most? Buying 25 raffle tickets could pay for an hour of specialist care for a patient like Angie. You can buy tickets here.
My daughters and I don’t associate Prospect Hospice with a sad time. We’re always so happy to be here. That’s why I really hope you will consider playing Prospect’s Spring raffle today. I know Angie would love it if our experience could help more families to get the same care we did.
Thank you so much for reading our story.
