This is why we provide education and development opportunities, all of which aim to encourage learning and build confidence in end of life care and support.
Prospect Hospice is asking supporters to take part in The Big Give Christmas Challenge so terminally ill patients who are nearing the end of their lives are not alone at night.
The charity is raising funds to cover the cost of night sits provided by its Prospect@Home team to patients this winter.
The Big Give Christmas Challenge runs from midday on Tuesday 30 November to midday on Tuesday 7 December and every donation made will be instantly doubled.
Prospect Hospice has already secured £15,000 from generous supporters, but during The Big Give Christmas Challenge it needs to raise another £15,000 to match this and reach its target of £30,000.
Sheryl Crouch, head of income at Prospect Hospice, said: “Many patients we care for wish to spend their final weeks of life at home and choose to die at home. Our team provides outstanding care which is tailored to their individual needs, thanks to generous donations we receive from our community.
“During The Big Give Christmas Challenge we would like to raise the funds needed so our Prospect@Home team can provide night sits for the next three months for patients who are nearing the end of their lives.
“The night sits are an essential part of the Prospect@Home service and are valued by patients and their families. Our nurses and healthcare assistants stay overnight in patients’ homes to provide the personal care and emotional support they need. If a patient is unable to sleep or has anxiety our team are there to comfort and help them.
“With our staff being there throughout the night they also provide reassurance to the loved ones of patients, enabling them to get some sleep and respite from their caring responsibilities which can be physically and emotionally draining.”
During The Big Give Christmas Challenge a donation of £16.50 would be doubled to £33, which would pay for an hour of a night sit. A donation of £165 would become £330, which would pay for a ten hour night sit.
“Any donation, however big or small, made during The Big Give Christmas Challenge will be doubled so it will have twice the impact. By taking part you will help us to be there for patients in Swindon and north east Wiltshire needing care so they are not alone at night,” added Sheryl.
