Team Leader – Inpatient Unit

Are you an experienced nurse with a passion for palliative care? Do you have the leadership qualities to lead and develop both services and staff on our inpatient unit? Prospect Hospice is looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual with exceptional clinical leadership skills to lead, motivate and inspire the nursing team to achieve the highest standards of end-of-life care.

In this rewarding role, you will make a positive difference to people’s lives. We’re looking for passionate people that embody our values. Our people are excellent and specialist at what they do, our people are what makes the hospice a great place to work. In a recent staff survey 100% of staff said they would be happy with the standard of care provided if a friend or relative needed treatment and 98% find the work they do has meaning and purpose.

Hours:  37.5 hours per week over 7 days (mostly Monday to Friday but occasional flexibility to cover weekend shifts/nights is required, as well as being part of the on-call rota).

What is the role?

As our inpatient unit team leader, you will act as a role model and line manager for our nurses, healthcare assistants and volunteers to provide exemplary patient care.

You will work with the clinical lead and have the peer support of senior clinical leaders across the hospice including our consultant and medical director, clinical nurse specialists and an advanced nurse practitioner and work with these leaders to contribute to shaping pathways of care.  You will fulfil a true nursing leadership role ensuring an effective quality nursing service, whilst striving for continuous improvement.

The hospice has a strong local reputation and is committed to ensuring that the people we provide comfort and care for continue to receive an exceptional level of support towards the end of their lives. We also strive to influence and enhance best practice in End of Life Care with other service providers. As a small organisation, we do things differently. Care is built around the needs of the people we serve; we respond creatively to enable our patients to get the most out of life and to enjoy the things that are important to them. What matters to patients and their loved ones, matters to us.

We are looking for a unique individual who is driven to work in collaboration with patients, families and other services to provide a truly individual, and person-centred approach to nursing.

We are looking for an experienced leader with an interest and passion for palliative care, although this may have been gained in a different setting such as a care home. Previous palliative care experience is preferred but a track record in leading and managing teams will be key to success in this role.

About you:

  • NMC Registered General Nurse
  • Experience of managing and developing people or large teams
  • Experience in implementing improvements to patient care
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary or professional team working

It would also be great if you have:

  • Teaching or mentoring qualification
  • Specialist palliative care experience
  • Management or leadership qualification or certificate, or willingness to undertake
  • Experience of working with patients and carers with mental health and learning disability needs
  • Degree in a health care related field, or working towards this

What is it like it to work here?

“Since joining the IPU at Prospect Hospice, I have enjoyed being able to provide hands on, person centred care with lots of opportunities to learn with a knowledgeable, friendly and supportive team.” Sarah, Registered Nurse

“Working at the Prospect Hospice allows me to be the Nurse that I have always wanted to be, to provide not only patient centred but also family centred care whilst encompassing holism throughout. I have been able to extend my knowledge and skills within the palliative care speciality, and continue to be supported to practice autonomously in a collaborative nurse led environment.” Kim, Senior Registered Nurse

We offer a great range of benefits, including:

  • 27 days annual leave entitlement plus bank holidays (rising with length of service)
  • Membership of the NHS pension scheme is available for existing members
  • Generous contributory pension scheme for all other staff
  • A commitment to supporting your professional development
  • Employee Assistance Programme and Mental Health First Aiders
  • Supportive induction, and training and development
  • Free parking
