Les and Gary on holiday

Les’ story

December 2024

News

The aim was to get me pain-free, so I could live as normal life as possible, for as long as possible…

‘I love travel, my partner Gary and I have travelled all over the world, in fact I love travelling so much I made a career out of it! My favourite place to visit was the Caribbean. The sand….it was just a magical place.’

This is Les. Les discovered he had prostate cancer in 2023. His biggest regret: not going to the doctor sooner. When his partner, Gary finally persuading him to go to his GP the cancer had spread, his treatment focussed on managing the cancer rather than saving Les’ life.

This is where we came in. Les’ GP recommend talking to Prospect Hospice about pain management and next steps.  Mel Buckley from our community team became Les’ go-to or as he calls her ‘the lovely Mel’.

‘From the start Mel was completely honest with me. She took time to explain everything, and her plan was to get me pain-free, so I could live as normal life as possible for as long as possible.

And the prospect did that. After that she kept in touch, calling me asking me how I was feeling and reassuring me when I wasn’t mentally in a good pace.

Coming to the hospice was a really weird experience. Of course, I knew there were hospices, but I didn’t realise what they did or about the care they offer. They do so much more than you realise I would never have thought about contacting Prospect if my GP hadn’t have done it for me.

Everyone at Prospect Hospice has done such a great job, and you’re just not recognised for the amazing job you do. The atmosphere here is so calm, so reassuring. I don’t feel scared. The feeling of coming here was, we’ll do whatever we can for you, and I felt that from day one.

Cancer is such a horrible, horrible disease, not just for the person with the disease but for

all their loved ones too and we need to recognise what places like the Prospect Hospice are invaluable. They’ve made me feel comfortable, so welcome, secure. I could go on and on forever, but in nutshell…Thank you.’
